Systems Control Engineer (Maritime Technology)

Our client is a fast-growing maritime technology company building innovative wind assisted propulsion systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions across global shipping.

They’re looking for a Systems Control Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of control systems, from architecture and algorithms through to onboard commissioning and trials. This is a key hire and the first dedicated controls engineering role in the team. You’ll play a central part in building the capability from the ground up.

It’s a unique opportunity to take full ownership of control systems in a company that’s tackling a global challenge with practical, deployable technology.

The Role

You’ll work across the full control system lifecycle, defining requirements, building architecture, writing and testing algorithms, and commissioning systems at sea. This is a hands-on, field-based role that will require travel for sea trials, factory testing, and monthly company meetups. As the company scales, you’ll help shape the direction of the controls function and build the team around it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement control systems for innovative wind propulsion technology
  • Define and maintain the architecture linking sensors, effectors and processors
  • Develop and optimise algorithms that ensure performance, safety and usability
  • Build and improve intuitive HMIs for demanding marine environments
  • Commission and troubleshoot systems onboard vessels
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to integrate components
  • Capture requirements and manage traceability from concept to support
  • Support the growth of the engineering team and controls capability

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong understanding of control system design, including sensor/effector integration
  • Full lifecycle experience: requirements, architecture, design, testing and deployment
  • Comfortable with networking protocols such as IP, CAN bus, Modbus, NMEA or Serial
  • Experience diagnosing issues in complex, deployed systems
  • Background in automation, ideally in marine, industrial or autonomous systems
  • Self-starter with a growth mindset and ability to work through ambiguity
  • Willingness to travel globally as needed for sea trials, testing and team collaboration

Desirable Experience

  • Model-based design and control algorithm deployment (e.g. Matlab/Simulink)
  • AI/ML applied to control systems
  • Knowledge of marine regulations and standards
  • HMI design for technical, safety-critical environments

What’s on Offer

  • Salary: £75,000 basic salary (Flexible depending on experience)
  • Private healthcare, pension, 25 days holiday and future opportunities for enhanced compensation
  • Initially a Remote role which will then move to hybrid with a Hampshire office base
  • Monthly UK meetups and engineering workshops (expenses covered)
  • Regular visits to ships and factories for testing and trials
  • Clear progression path as the company and engineering team grow
  • Opportunity to work at the intersection of cleantech and real-world engineering

Why This Role?

This is a blank-page opportunity to help define how control systems are developed and delivered in a business committed to real-world decarbonisation. If you’re motivated by ownership, thrive in early-stage environments and want to build something that makes a global difference, this could be your next move.
